We are "sheeple", deal with it!!!

Right up front, this diary was inspired by "Where I call your butt out"... and I would have commented there if not for the 400+ comments already, and besides the whole freak-out over "personality cults is a pet peeve of mine anyway.

I am a Deaniac, having gotten involved for the first time in '03... and I fit the stereotypes of a Deaniac very well. If we can get people into office that actually represent me, I will probably no longer live on this blog. I care about GLBT rights, because I am an L, I care about abortion rights because I am a woman and because both my mother and my sister had backstreet abortions, etc... But I don't care enough to live here full time. I will always be more active than I used to be, but that's because I am more conscious now of my responsibilities as a citizen. I am here because I am a citizen, not because I am an "activist" in a traditional sense, or because I am a rabid partisan. In the past, the guys I got excited about never got off the ground, but they could be Dems or Republicans. They were Powell, Cuomo, and McCain. What does all this have to do with my provocative title? Answers below.

In other words, I am a member of the masses upon whom the fate of democracy ultimately hangs, for the "people" are the last check and balance built into the system. And who are the masses? They are members of a group species that's what, they are "sheeple". In dangerous times members of a group species look for a leader, because the group must act as one to survive and can only do so when they have a strong leader to follow. This is our greatest strength, but as is often the case, it is our greatest weakness as well. We no longer live in small groups, and thus sometimes our leaders are really "wolves in sheep's clothing" who prey on the sheep instead of protecting them.

That being said, the point is mute because we cannot change our spots, nor can we our basic natures. We have to look at things realistically, and the fact is, in order to get a revolution we have to get the sheeple involved...and that takes "charismatic" leadership. A guy (probably) who can convince the herd to follow him, who can inspire and bring hope in dark times. Is it "Messianic"? Yup, it sure is...because that's who "The Messiah"/"The One" and so on is, he is the one who can led the group to safety.

You don't have to be cynical about human nature to realize this, but we have to if we want to really head away from the cliff we are charging towards. We always lose because we think the answer is elevating the masses until they are just like us, and that just ain't going to happen. Therefore it's our job to make sure we eliminate the wolves in sheep's clothing from the pool of potential shepherds.

Turning away from a candidate like Obama for another Mondale, Kerry, or Hillary is political suicide. With the Repugs in such disarray, Hillary might actually win in a sqeeker, but that would enable the elites to keep the herd broken up into smaller scattered bunches that make easier prey.

Besides, as a Deaniac, I gotta say the herd is doing a damn good job right now. The South is now leading the way in racial healing, who would have thunk it?

Have some kool aid, the current offering is just what "The Dr" ordered.
